Howdy folks, how are you today? Are you ready for another travel story? A short one, this time. About the Italian island of Sardinia, where I’ve been only once, by accident. You see, I actually wanted to go to Cinque Terre and I had booked my Ryanair ticket, leaving from Charleroi Airport. But for some reason, there was a strike on the day I was supposed to leave. So, I panicked, looked up other cheap flights leaving from whatever airport in the area and ended up with a Dusseldorf-Alghero itinerary.
So that’s the story on how I ended up in Sardinia. But there’s another story. Years and years ago I was drinking beer and tequila in a cave in Barcelona when I got hit on by a Sardinian girl, who actually used the phrase: “Your eyes are as beautiful as the sea of Sardinia.” Because I had never been to Sardinia before, I couldn’t really verify that, but I had a strong hunch she only wanted to get in my pants. Turned out I was right and she was clearly lying.
Anyway, thing is, ladies and gentlemen, I didn’t really like my trip to Sardinia that much. Obviously I wasn’t planning on going there, but that’s not an excuse. It was hot and expensive and Alghero was just okay, but nothing spectacular like Cinque Terre. I got the worst sunburn I ever had, the hotel or hostel I stayed in was rubbish. And I wasn’t in a good mood. And that’s why you’ll find Alghero in my top destinations, listed under ‘most disappointing’. Which it probably doesn’t deserve. I feel I should give Sardinia a second chance. But instead of going to Alghero, I would go to the beautiful and exclusive Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast) in the north of the island. Then I would rent a boat and sail to the Archipelago della Maddalena. And I would never come home.
